Tip #7
The Relationship Between Mindset, Motivation and Patience.
Published: Sept 8, 2021
So, mindset. We already know what that is from the previous chapters.
But do we know much about motivation, and the link between motivation and mindset? Well, probably not, but that’s what I’m here for.
Let's start with why. Why do we want to become or be motivated at all? Why not just sit around all day doing nothing? After all, it is much easier… right?
We want to ‘feel’ motivated to achieve all the things we want to achieve in life. But most people sit around waiting for a surge of energy and motivation to hit them in the face. The real difference between the rich and the poor is mindset. The rich don’t sit around waiting for motivation to hit them in the face, they create it. We are all creators of energy, meaning we all have the ability to do ANYTHING in life! Isn’t that exciting? That you could do, change and be anything you want?
The trade off? Energy. But you can make more of it!
It’s still important to listen to your body when it is truly tired, but sometimes all you need is a moment to give yourself a pep talk and remember why you want to achieve this in the first place to snap you back into action.
So rather than waiting for motivation and inspiration to come to you, why don’t you go and find it? After all, you’re the one in charge here right? Why are you answering to it, when it can answer to you? Make mindset your dog… you tell it what to do. You control yourself and you create whatever happens in your life.
If you feel as though life has been tough on you, it’s because there is something for you to learn from it. Maybe, you must learn to have faith in yourself, strength to get yourself out of that situation or that situation is telling you it’s time to move on from what you are doing, as it’s no longer working for you.
So, when you’re sitting there feeling hopeless with nothing to do, remind yourself of firstly what you want to achieve (the why), how you’re going to do it (the how) and when you’re going to do it (the when). And if your answer to the when isn’t now, then you better expect a knock at the door any second now, because I’m coming to punch your mind into shape!!
1. The Why:
So you want that next promotion? Or that house? Or that new lifestyle?
Whatever it is, set yourself a goal first. It could be anything from getting a new job to bring the next Jeff Bezos.
2. The How:
Once you have defined your goal, you will now be in a position to start thinking about how you’re going to get there. What do you need in order to achieve this, and how are you going to break it down into steps to get there?
3. The When:
Staying motivated. Motivation isn’t a feeling, it’s a choice. A choice you make everyday, whether consciously made or not, it’s still made. Sometimes the easy way is simply just easier. To simply cruise by in life, but it’s not always enough for some.
Societal pressures, family pressures and peer pressures dictate how we rule our lives, and it’s time to break free from that.
What do you want to do?
For me, I always loved writing. When I got to a certain age, it was no longer ‘cool’ to read or write, so I suppressed the desire, and only recently re-discovered my love for writing again. Crazy, isn’t it? If I wouldn’t have re-discovered myself, I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this to you (thank goodness, right??).
So, the when. When is the time? It’s now.
There is never going to be a ‘good’ or a ‘better’ time. Short on finances? Find another way. Find A way. There is always something you can do about it, so quit with the excuses and figure out what is holding you back.
Is it you? Are you scared to take the jump? So… how are you going to overcome this obstacle?
Honestly, for me, it was just jumping in at the deep-end with no armbands or anything to save me. Just doing it. If you overthink, you will postpone. And if you postpone, it won’t get done. Just jump in at the deep-end and don’t give it another thought! You know you want to do it, so just get the first step over and done with, then figure it out!
Patience: results aren’t just going to happen overnight. After you have taken the first 3 steps above, the ‘honeymoon phase’ may start to wear off. That’s where patience, and again motivation and mindset comes in. You think Jeff Bezos grew his business overnight? No. So why do you think you’re an exception? It takes a stupid amount of hard work, and an extremely strong mindset.
Anyone can do it, but not many people are motivated enough to start AND continue even after not seeing immediate results, or patient enough to wait for those results. Why? Most the times when it comes to business or even working out, they’re doing it for the wrong reasons. To impress everyone else. They end up hating the process and giving up, because they aren’t doing it to enjoy it.
They’re doing it to impress people with the results. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, but it is in the world of mindset, because if you’re focused on others, you’re not watering your own grass. Therefore, you're not seeing results, and the vicious circle repeats itself over and over again. Until you finally give up.
If you have already given up, maybe you should realise that actually, it may not have been because you were bad at it, but your mindset was all wrong. Mindset is like a strategy, you play to your strengths and understand & improve your weaknesses, and you win the game.
So just like that, understanding basic psychology triumphs. I think maybe it’s time for you to take a good look at yourself, accept yourself and any weaknesses, and figure out what you’re going to do to work on them, and achieve your goals.
