Girl In The Green Dress Pt2.

Dedicated to him, you know who you are

Updated: 25th Nov, 2022

I woke up to a message from him.

I rolled my eyes.

I wasn’t going to let him win this time.

Memories from the night before attacked my mind.

‘So what are we going to do about this… situationship?’ I’d asked him.

‘This isn’t a situationship. It’s a can’t-happen-ship’ he’d replied.

My heart.

Can’t happen? I’d thought.

Like… ever?

His words replayed through my mind.

‘Oh’ I’d replied.

‘Hey guys wait up’ a voice behind us said.

Great. Terrible timing. I thought.

When we’d finally reached our destination, I gazed up at him for a moment.

But by the time that moment had passed he was by the entrance speaking to a random group of girls whilst smoking a cigarette.

For God’s Sake. There was that anger again.

Right at that moment is when I made a promise to myself I’d never let him make me feel that way again.

Like an idiot.

I pretended it didn’t bother me and walked in, head held high to say goodbye to everyone before I left.

I had to shout over the lively music to make my exit.

Just as I was done with my goodbyes, I turned around only to bump straight into a familiar face.

Or well… chest.

His chest.

Great. I thought

‘I’m off now’ I said shortly.

‘Where are you going? Hotel or home?’ he said with hope.

‘I don’t know yet’ I replied. ‘See you when I see you’.

I swear I meant nothing by it, but he frowned.

‘Alright’ he snorted.

‘What? I don’t know when I’ll next see you. We have no more events planned' I glanced up with hope.

‘Well… I’ll come down Monday. No, Tuesday, I have a meeting down near you’ he told me.

‘Ok’ I said.

‘Ok’ he mirrored.

We stood in silence for a moment, before he asked me if I was okay again.

‘Just tired’ I replied.

He nodded.

‘And tired of all… this’ I said, finally.

‘You know I don’t talk about feelings’ he said.

I rolled my eyes.

‘But we have something special. We both know that’ He started.

‘We’re both busy smashing it at work, so it can’t happen. We’re just too busy. But you have a special place in my heart’ he said, planting a kiss on my cheek.

I looked up at him through my glazed eyes.

My heart raced at the sound of those words.

Finally…

I’d been clutching at straws for the last 6 months, waiting for something. A sign. An acknowledgement of his feelings towards me.

‘See… how hard was that?’ I laughed. ‘Thank you’ I added with a more serious tone.

He looked down at me with a tender look in his eyes. A look I’d gotten very used to seeing by now, and planted one final kiss on my cheek before I walked away.

I felt… confused.

The entire night he’d been chatting away with girls. On purpose.

Now, we were both officially single, so that wasn’t the problem.

The problem was that we were both usually respectful and mindful of each other’s presence, and therefore generally didn’t flirt in front of each other.

But not that night.

It was a first for us.

And it wasn’t a good first-time thing.

My heart felt heavy leaving him behind, but I knew it was the right thing to do.

Plus, I didn’t really fancy watching his attempts at making me jealous.

I knew this had to be the end.

So I left, with one single tear sliding down my cheek, where his lips had not long been.

It was a sad love story.

I turned around one last time but a crowd of people had already formed around him and he was no longer in sight.

I continued walking out into the rain until I arrived at the car.

Sadly and unwillingly I opened the door.

Secretly, I was hoping to turn around only to see him standing there in the rain. Waiting for me. Running towards me to tell me he’d made a mistake. Begging me to be his. Like a movie scene.

But he wasn’t.

Because this love wasn’t a movie, it was a reality.

And realities don’t have a happy ending.
